Preparing for Your Headshot

Having a timeless, conservative, and all around great portrait is necessary for looking professional in business. We will help you put your best foot forward. As we capture your images you are able to view them in real time. This allows you to make any adjustments necessary for a perfect final image. Our in-house photoshop professional will retouch and enhance your favorite image.  It will be provided to you in both web and print files in a timely fashion. This post will tell you everything you need to know when preparing for Your Headshot!

In our studio we offer a variety of backgrounds for your professional headshot. Options include: black, various shades of grey, white, and blue. We can also meet your company guidelines by replacing or changing your headshot background in Photoshop. If you have a larger group of individuals that need headshots we can bring our studio to your office! We can also go on location to your favorite spot around town or to your workplace or for an environmental background!

What to Wear!

Women:

  • We recommend wearing a solid, mid-toned to dark colored jacket. Avoid tweed, plaid, pinstripes and other complex or bold patterns as they tend to be too busy and detract from the purpose of the image which is to show YOU!
  • Please wear a blouse or dress underneath. For these items please make sure to bring colors that you feel you look best in and compliment your features and complexion. V-neck & jewel necklines look best.
  • Long sleeves or ¾ length are preferred. It is important to limit exposed skin as arms can be overwhelming in an image.
  • We advise that you complete the look with some simple jewelry that accents your features.
  •  You want to look dressed up, put together, and the best version of you that you can be, but still YOU. Too much make up and too dramatic of a hairstyle can take away from your natural appearance.
  • Hair and make up should be done but not overdone. We recommend completing the look with mascara, lip gloss or lipstick, and cheek color to highlight your natural features.
  • If using professional makeup and hair services be sure to mention the look is for a headshot session and use descriptive words such as soft, natural, and polished. If you are looking for recommendations of possible hair and makeup artists just ask!

Men:

  • We recommend wearing a solid, mid-toned to dark colored suit jacket and pastel-colored shirt such as ivory, yellow, blue, pink, purple, etc. Avoid tweed, plaid, pinstripes and other complex or bold patterns as they tend to be too busy and detract from the purpose of the image which is to show YOU!
  • Ties are strongly encouraged unless you are trying to project a more business casual look. Patterned ties are acceptable as they are a smaller portion of the headshot image and do not tend to overwhelm the image.
  • Hair should be neat, styled with gel if you so choose, and please be aware that any stubble or facial hair will be visible in the image.

All final images will receive basic retouching to remove blemishes, stray hairs, and even out skin tone. Additional extensive retouching is available upon request.
